Voleo - Social Trading App for Investment Clubs
About Service
Voleo is an app that enables even beginners to invest in stocks confidently. It aims to facilitate the formation of investment clubs with trusted individuals such as family members, friends, and colleagues and make stock investing accessible and effortless.
Hosted a student competition sponsored by NASDAQ, the world's leading venture-backed stock market. The competition included a simulated trading platform (SimuTrader), which allowed participants to experience investment without any impact on their actual trades.

Situation
The previous development had focused on developing the iOS app, leading to inconsistent and different user experiences on the Android app and web application. To address this, my team rebuilt the platform to improve its functionality. The web application was made responsive and integrated with the Android app to ensure a cohesive design across the entire platform.
Problems
- Inconsistent design style
- User onboarding with a high bounce rate
- Inconsistency in user experience across all platforms
- Two different service entrances (one for actual transaction, the other for simulation)

Style Guides
I researched the functions, features, and design of competing services using a document provided by an external marketing firm. To stand out in a growing market for investment apps, I identified the unique offerings and created a style guide tailored to their target audience. I presented three design proposals with slightly different design directions and finalized the final style based on stakeholder feedback.
Target Audience
The user base encompasses a range of investment knowledge levels, each with their own perspective on using the app. For example, beginners may want to gain knowledge, intermediates may wish to experiment with new ideas, and experts may want to share their insights and collaborate with others.
Userβ¦
- I want to share ideas and experience
- I want to discuss investment options
- I am interested in learning and investing
- I am motivated to gain knowledge and willing to test new ideas
Three Design Directions
The design aligns with Voleo's goal of fostering teamwork and collaboration in investment. Using the primary branding colors to create a clean and friendly aesthetic that conveys a sense of cooperation.

Aims to create a welcoming environment that aligns to offer a secure and intelligent investment experience. Focuses on enhancing education and participation for beginner investors through explanatory icons.

Conveys a sense of competitiveness through the use of bold, high-contrast colors. Reflects an atmosphere of inspiration and excitement for investing.

User Onboarding
An investigation into why there were fewer than 1,000 active users despite over 8,000 registered users revealed that onboarding was an issue. Users found it challenging to comprehend the procedures prior to making an investment, which led to low usage of the service.
The onboarding flow was significantly improved in order to achieve to welcome beginners to start investing.
Problems
Solutions
Progressive Web App
Implemented the responsive design of the web application in the Android app to achieve a progressive web app-like experience. Create a seamless interface with minimal differences between mobile view and Android app access. It gives users the option to use the platform according to their environment. Users can intuitively and effectively use the app while maintaining the same experience and UI components.
2 in 1 Platform
Two entrances were placed on one platform for convenience, as Voleo (actual transaction) and SimuTrader (without actual transaction) were offered using different URLs. We finally applied the idea of using a tab menu to switch between the two environments, considering the schedule and development cost.
Retrospection
Failures
- The client conducted a user interview, but the goal was not clearly defined, making it difficult to analyze the information obtained. I prioritized the client's needs over the user's needs.
- The lack of adherence to the design system resulted in design inconsistency. My collaboration with another UI designer was marred by our failure to share our designs regularly, resulting in the creation of similar UI components.
Solutions
- It would have been beneficial for our team to conduct another interview or at least a user survey, even though the timeline was tight.
- Establishing concrete rules for a design system is a time-consuming process, and it can be challenging to allocate time for it in a fast-paced work environment. Nevertheless, it is crucial to define rules for each UI component and share them with designers gradually, even if it is in small increments.
